Online Dispute Resolution

Online Dispute Resolution, also known as ODR, is a way to resolve disputes online. ODR allows parties to resolve disputes without being physically present in court, provides greater flexibility for court users, reduces travel difficulties, increases accessibility to the courts, and may protect the health of the parties.

After a defendant is served and both parties have registered for ODR, the parties may begin settlement negotiations. If the parties reach an agreement, the program will generate the settlement forms to file with the court. If settlement cannot be reached, the parties may request the assistance of a mediator to help resolve the case.

During mediation, online conversations will be confidential as the mediator helps facilitate constructive dialogue between the parties with a goal of reaching agreement. A mediator is a neutral person, not a judge, who will help the parties reach an acceptable agreement.

Mediation is voluntary and provided at no cost. All parties are expected to participate in good faith. If mediation is does not resolve your dispute, your case will proceed to a hearing in front of a judge.

Please Note: If you require assistance of auxiliary aids or services to participate in court because of a disability, immediately call your district ADA coordinator at 319-833-3332. If you are hearing impaired, call Relay Iowa TTY at 1-800-735-2942. The disability coordinator cannot provide legal device.
